Lose yourself in the layered history of the Battle House, one of the most treasured landmarks in historic
downtown Mobile, Alabama. Starting in mid-2006 with its
grand reopening, this storied hotel will allow guests to
trace the footsteps of some of the nation’s most prominent
national leaders. Established on the site of a military
headquarters set up by Andrew Jackson during the war of
1812, this esteemed property also served as a Confederate
hospital during the Civil War, hosted many American generals
and statesmen, and was the center of local high society for
more than a century. But the story behind this
celebrated hotel doesn’t end there.
Other notable dates from its illustrious history include:
- 1852: The Battle House first opened on the site of a
former military headquarters set up by Andrew Jackson during
the war of 1812, taking its name from James and Samuel
Battle.
- 1860: Stephen A. Douglas stayed at the Battle House the
night he lost the presidency to Abraham Lincoln.
- 1880: By order of a joint resolution of Congress signed by
President Ulysses S. Grant, a National Weather Service
station was established at the Battle House Hotel.
- 1900: The Battle House Hotel, originally designed by Frank
M. Andrews, was rebuilt. The seven-story brick structure had
accented corners, and the first two stories were tan brick
massed as stone.
- 1905: A fire originating in the north wing destroyed the
hotel, causing $450,000 in damages.
- 1908: The current Battle House, designed by Frank Andrews
of New York, was erected on the site of the old building.
- 1913: President Woodrow Wilson was honored at a breakfast
given by the Chamber of Commerce at the Battle House Hotel.

Soon to emerge as one of the cornerstones of downtown
Mobile, the Battle House promises to bring a new level
of luxury and sophistication to its newly-revitalized
surroundings. Witness this dramatic transformation
firsthand, as the culmination of a historic movement to
restore this area’s classic Southern charm:
- 1974: The hotel closed its doors and became a symbol of
the vanished glory of Mobile’s downtown and historic
district.
- 1980: The abandoned Battle House Hotel was the only
building still standing on the city block – a testament to
the strength of its design.
- 2003: A total of 8,000 cubic yards of concrete were poured
within 24 hours for the new foundation of the Battle House – the equivalent of 30 miles of four-foot-wide
sidewalk.
- 2006: The Battle House Hotel and the RSA tower will
reopen. Built with a grand total of $132 million, the
complex will take its place along the city skyline as the
tallest building in Alabama, with 38 floors.
